- Season of sowing: October–December, especially during the cooler months in most parts of India.
- Mode of sowing: Seeds can be sown directly in well-prepared soil or started in a nursery/seedbed and transplanted after about 4–6 weeks. Suitable for raised beds, pots and grow bags.
- Germination time: Approximately 7–14 days under suitable temperature and moisture conditions.
- Sunlight: 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- Soil Type: Fertile, loose and well-drained sandy-loam or loamy soil enriched with organic matter. Avoid heavy, compact and waterlogged soil.
- Watering: Water regularly and moderately, keeping the soil evenly moist during early growth and bulb development. Avoid excessive watering.
- Harvesting: Approximately 90–120 days after transplanting, depending on growing conditions. Harvest when the bulbs are well developed and the tops begin to bend or fall over naturally.
- Blooming Period: Onion is normally harvested before flowering for bulb production. If left unharvested, mature plants may produce flower stalks during the following growing season.
- Planting Period: October–December for bulb production in most Indian growing regions.
- Expected Plant Height: Approximately 30–60 cm, depending on growing conditions and variety.
- Growing Location: Outdoor kitchen gardens, home gardens, raised beds, balconies, terraces, pots and grow bags.
- Suitable For: Home gardeners, kitchen gardens, terrace gardens, container gardening and beginners interested in growing fresh onions.
- Watering: Maintain consistent moisture during bulb formation. Reduce watering as the bulbs mature and the foliage begins to fall over. Avoid standing water around the bulbs.
- Care Instructions: Provide 6–8 hours of sunlight, use loose fertile soil and add compost or well-decomposed organic manure before planting. Maintain proper spacing, remove weeds regularly and keep the soil evenly moist. Avoid excessive nitrogen and overwatering during bulb development. Allow the bulbs to mature properly before harvesting.
