Citrus plants belong to the rue family and are a genus of flowering shrubs and trees. These are tropical and subtropical, highly edible fruits with thick skins and lots of flavors. Citrus fruits and Guava are both widely used categories of fruits and are used in several forms like juices, jams, seasoning, across the year. Today we’ll look at the overall process and best practices for citrus plants as well as the guava fruit.
Citrus plants and their farming
Citrus plants and trees like lemons, limes, grapefruits, oranges, etc. are beautiful with their ripe yellows, oranges, and greens and have the most fantastic aroma among other fruits. These fruits and vegetables are used throughout the world in the form of food, juice, jam, etc., and are considered the biggest source of Vitamin C.
Temperature requirements: 20–25-degree Celsius
Rainfall requirements: 75-200 cm
Soil PH: Any type of soil with PH between 5-8
Best Practices for Citrus Farming
The first thing to consider while citrus farming is the climate that you are in. This helps in determining whether the crop needs to be planted in the ground or in a container. Citrus plants love the sun. Placing them in the ground is a great idea if you are in a zone with a lot of sun exposure, but otherwise, you should try and place them in a portable container so that you can move it based on the natural light if needed. Citrus plants need a lot of irrigation at regular intervals. Weeds in the citrus plants should be removed by hand or by use of fertilizers. You can speak to experts at Utkarsh about the use of the best fertilizers for citrus plants.
Citrus scab, Citrus canker, Citrus Tristeza disease, Gummosis, etc. are some of the most common diseases in Citrus plants. These affect the leaves as well as the fruits, and you can see some of the brown spots on citrus plants. These are not harmful to humans but they decrease the nutrient value of the crops, lead to wastage and also make leaves and fruits fall prematurely.
For the care of these plants, you can use some of the Utkarsh products that can help prevent diseases and also boost the health of your citrus plantation. The organic fertilizers need to be used at different stages of the crop like 15-30 days before flowering, at bud formation, or flowering. You can reach out to the experts at Utkarsh and acquire a detailed schedule for the same.
Guava and its farming
Guava, or as its botanical name suggests, Psidium guajava, is an extremely juicy fruit grown as a tropical tree or bush. The guava fruit is a seed-based fruit and therefore grows in many sizes and quantities. The guava tree produces small white flowers that yield round or oval fruits. They have a hard exterior with soft flesh that may be white, pink, red or even yellow.
Guava is commercially viable, with high Vitamin C, calcium, phosphorus, and pectin content. While Guava is grown all over India, it requires soil that is well-drained as it is sensitive to waterlogging. These plants thrive in alluvial or lateral soil.
Temperature requirements: 15–25-degree Celsius
Rainfall requirements: 40-100 cm
Soil PH: between 4.5-8
Best Practices for Guava Farming
Guavas also require protection from the cold. Guava trees should be fertilized every one or two months in their growing stage and then with increased spacing as the tree grows old. While growing guava, one must be aware of pests like the fruit fly, scale insect, and the mealybug. For the purpose of weeding, use mulches like black polythene or dried leaves. You can spread them immediately after planting. Weeding may be done through light digging or hand hoeing because the root system lies within 15 cm.
A critical disorder in guava is the fruit drop and it results in about 40-60% loss because of different environmental and physiological factors. Spraying of GA or Utkarsh Bhim Plus @ 0.5 ml/litre has been found to be effective in reducing the fruit drop in guava. The practice of bronzing in guavas has been seen in places where the soil fertility is not very high and the PH is low.
The affected plants tend to have purple and red specks which are scattered all over the leaves. Under extreme conditions, complete defoliation happens and fruits can be characterized with patterns of brown color on the skin, leading to noticeably low yield.
Harvesting of Guava crops happens all around the year barring maybe the months of May/June in many different regions in the country. Still, the harvesting periods are highest in north India during the month of August for the rainy season crop, and in the months of November- December for winter season crop and March-April for spring season crop.
Most of these citrus crops and guava crops are extremely juicy and are also used widely for their health benefits. Even Ayurveda stresses a lot on the use of citrus for good cleansing of both body and skin. A lot of these crops require minimum care, but be sure to use the correct manure and fertilizers to prevent your yield from pests and other common diseases in citrus and guava crops.
